In 2375, Rear Admiral Ling was at Starfleet Headquarters when Lieutenant Hackworth reported that they had lost touch with DP-7, a weapons platform responsible for defending North America. Ling was still at Headquarters when the Breen attacked San Francisco and destroyed Headquarters, killing Ling. (TNG short story: "Eleven Hours Out")
