Linlithgow was a settlement in West Lothian, Scotland on Earth.

Linlithgow was the home of Arlyne Jorgensen Scott in the early 23rd century. Her son, Montgomery Scott, knew the starship layout of his new assignment on the USS Enterprise so well that he considered himself as much at home there as he would be in his mother's house in Linlithgow. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Glory)

Scotty's statement implies he was raised in Linlithgow, but does not specifically state this, only that his mother lived there. Numerous alternate origin locations have cropped up over the years, such as ST comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek", which states he was born in Glasgow. Of course, it is possible to be born in one place and then raised in another.
