During the 23rd century, a special crystalline form of lithium was used in the lithium crystal circuits in power systems aboard Federation starships. Lithium cracking stations were established on several planets that would "crack" the lithium for use aboard starships. (TOS episodes: "Where No Man Has Gone Before", "Mudd's Women")
