Maass was a male human Maquis leader in the 2370s. He was initially a computer programmer on planet Valan III, which was turned over to Cardassian rule by the Federation-Cardassian Treaty of 2370. Maass protested to Starfleet liaison Calvin Hudson when the Cardassians began to curtail civil liberties on Valan III, to little effect. Cardassian harassment escalated, when they tainted the colony's replicator systems, which led to the death of Maass's daughter, Taliana. Following this, Maass became a member of the Maquis.
In early 2373, Maass and his cell were to meet with another Maquis cell in the Salva system to hand off a Klingon sensor shield. However, both Maquis ships were attacked by Cardassian forces and heavily damaged before Commander William T. Riker, aboard the shuttle Anaximenes, was able to blind the Cardassians' sensors and allow them to land on a moon of Salva IV. Maass agreed to turn over their Klingon technology in return for help from Starfleet, but later was able to escape custody aboard the Maquis ship Liberté, having only turned over a collection of antiquated Klingon weapons.
