Mandarin was a Chinese dialect which was widely spoken in the northern and south-western regions of China in the planet Earth.
By the 2260s, Chaoyang Soo had some understanding of the dialect and, at least, had the ability to count to ten. (TOS - The Brave and the Bold, Book One novella: The First Artifact)
