In the 23rd century, Masaba was home to a primitive humanoid civilization, the Masabans-or, as they refer to themselves-"The Cat People." The planet had once been much more technologically advanced, with ruins of great computer-controlled installations hidden in Masaba's wilderness. Spock said that the ruins, which made use of dilithium, resembled an Aztec temple. The landscapes of the planet included a swampy region with swamp beasts, and plains abundant with shooting plants, also infested by Masaban blood worms.
The Cat People established a settlement south of the plains and were seen living with a large number of black cats among them. They revered the ancient ruins and a Druid, who was the bearer of the Eye of Kakos, occasionally entered the temple to pray for good weather. That was until he was killed by a swamp beast.
In the 2260s decade, the Starfleet starship USS Enterprise was stranded near Masaba. During the dimensional transfer, it depleted its dilithium and was locked in a decaying orbit above the planet. As traces of dilithium were detected on the planet, a landing party consisting of Kirk, Spock and McCoy, visited this world. They made contact with the Masaban tribal chief, then brought a shooting plant to the medicine man in order to make for them a repellent against the blood worms. Fighting the swap beasts, they recovered the Eye of Kakos in order to enter the temple.
After overcoming a puzzle of alien symbols, the crew activate a powerful computer that allowed them access to local star chart of the unknown region, as well to a store of much-needed raw dilithium. (TOS video game: 25th Anniversary)
