A standard dosage is 10 cc. It works by enveloping the poison to prevent its absorption, while soothing and protecting the tissue. Depending on the dose, it can sometimes also help remove the poison. Its possible side effects include a feeling of stimulation, and in Vulcanoids, it can cause stomach cramps and nausea. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)
Commander Spock, first officer of the USS Enterprise was once poisoned by thorns fired from a pod plant on Gamma Trianguli VI. A large dose of masiform D ("...enough [of it] to make the whole CREW turn handsprings," according to McCoy) helped to keep him alive until the poison wore off. (TOS episode: "The Apple")
In 2285, Montgomery Scott was administered 15 ccs of masiform D, one and a half times the standard dosage, to counteract the poison of a Dimorian water rat which the assassin Enigma had placed in his system. (TOS comic: "Who Is... Enigma?")
