Massachusetts is a region of the North American continent on the planet Earth, with boundaries that were created as the area was settled as a geopolitical subdivision of the United States of America nation.
The Federation starship USS Massachusetts was named for this location.

The city of Salem is located in Massachusetts. The site of the infamous Salem witch trials, a number of Megans visiting Earth died at the hands of the Humans living in the city. (TAS episode: "The Magicks of Megas-Tu")
Mestral of the planet Vulcan was in the city of Boston, Massachusetts, during the outbreak of World War III. Shortly thereafter, he encountered Zefram Cochrane at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the neighboring city of Cambridge. (ENT short story: "Mestral")
