The MediaWiki namespace is a mechanism allowing non-developers to customize or translate the MediaWiki web interface. For example, the whole content of the page MediaWiki:Tagline is "Memory Beta, the wiki for licensed Star Trek content.", the message which is displayed at the top of each page of each page. When this page is edited, the new message appears automatically at the top of every page. (See Special:Allmessages — only administrators are permitted to edit these pages.)

(Note that templates no longer reside in the MediaWiki namespace; they now have their own Template: namespace.)
