Merken Vreenak

Merken Vreenak was a longtime participant in Romulan politics with a longtime suspicion of the United Federation of Planets.

Vreenak was a staunch Romulan chauvinist. Gell Kamemor though of him as having a sharp mind, but thought that his decision making process was often clouded by these beliefs. (TLE novel: Serpents Among the Ruins)

In 2311, as a proconsul, he demanded to examine the USS Universe data himself to search for Federation duplicity. He also remained unconvinced that Admiral Vokar was responsible for the attack on the Foxtrot sector, stating that it was uncharacteristic of his behavior. (TLE novel: Serpents Among the Ruins)

By the 2360s, Vreenak had become a member of the Senate. Ardently pro-Dominion, he negotiated, and signed, the Star Empire's nonaggression pact in late 2373, just days before the beginning of the Dominion War. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight")

In late 2374, Vreenak met with Weyoun on Soukara. He later travelled to Deep Space 9 on Benjamin Sisko's request. Sisko, Elim Garak and Grathon Tolar had created a forged holorecording of Weyoun and Corat Damar talking about the invasion of the Romulan Empire.

Vreenak later discovered the recording was a forgery and left the station. He was killed when a bomb planted by Garak destroyed his shuttle soon after. His apparant assassination by the Dominion made the Romulans withdraw from the pact and join the Federation Alliance. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight")

Spock and Ruanek were talking to Kimara Cretak when Amarik told them of Vreenak's death. (ST short story: "Blood Sacrifice")
