Mission- Impossible

Mission: Impossible was a 20th and 21st century entertainment franchise created by the Human civilization of the planet Earth. Mission: Impossible began as a television program in the 1960s decade and later entries in the series were released as feature movies.

History and specifics[]

The plot of Mission: Impossible involved a team of secret agents working on clandestine assignments from an undisclosed spymaster, and often involved a last minute escape from danger.

The beginning of each story usually involved a secret message being retrieved from an unlikely location on an audio tape, and then the message informing the listener that the tape will self-destruct, eliminating evidence of the communication. Roberta Lincoln made a quip quoting the line "this tape will self-destruct in 5 seconds…" when she and Gary Seven were encountering future technology from the 23rd century. (TOS novel: Assignment: Eternity)

Trip Tucker's fascination with antique arts and entertainment media had caused him to discuss the program at least once with Malcolm Reed. While on a mission where unforeseen circumstances placed Captain Jonathan Archer's life in danger, Reed just imagined the kind of comments referencing Mission: Impossible that Tucker was going to make as Reed placed his life on the line to protect their commanding officer. (ENT - Strange New Worlds 9 short story: "Rounding a Corner Already Turned")

Background[]

Mission: Impossible was produced by Paramount Television at the same studio lot as Star Trek: The Original Series and shared many of the same production staff. Leonard Nimoy went on to play a starring role in M:I as Star Trek was ending. Some trivia shared between the shows was that "cordrazine" was also used by M:I writers as the name of a fictional substance. ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia theorizes that the USS Lalo was named by TNG writers for Lalo SchifrinWP, composer of the iconic M:I theme music. Other Star Trek references mentioning associations with Mission: Impossible are ST reference: The World of Star Trek and Inside Star Trek: The Real Story.
