The Mob, also known as the Mafia or Cosa Nostra was a criminal organization active during the 19th and 20th centuries on Earth. The mob was very active in early 20th century Chicago, to the point that conventional government in the city nearly collapsed. (TOS episode: "A Piece of the Action")

Stories about the Mob were widespread in American popular culture in the 20th century, spawning a number of movies on the subject. (SCE eBook: Fables of the Prime Directive)

In 1992, the book Chicago Mobs of the Twenties detailed the history of the mob during this period. In 2168, a copy of that book was left on Sigma Iotia II by the crew of the USS Horizon. The Iotians saw the mob as a perfect society, and changed their society to one based on that of the mob. When the crew of the USS Enterprise visited the planet in 2268, they helped guide the Iotians into a more ethical system. (TOS episode: "A Piece of the Action")

A Godfather was a title associated with the Mafia. Orions tended to think that 23rd century Earth was still ruled by Mafia godfathers after experiencing a craze for 20th century Earth culture that began in the mid-22nd century, after the UNSS Marco Polo sold them a cargo of artifacts from that era on reference stardate 0/7907.27 (c. 2150). (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge)

The holo-novelist Felix also designed a jack in the box into the Vic Fontaine program in which mobsters from the East Coast took over the operation of Vic's club in Las Vegas. The crew of Deep Space 9 helped Vic defeat the mobsters using 20th century means. (DS9 episode: "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang")

Other mobsters in the Bashir 62 holosuite program included Beniamino Calderone and Joey Conterelli. (DS9 novel: Ascendance)
