Nancy Randolph was a Human woman, a Starfleet officer aboard the SS Ariel (survey ship/scout) in the 23rd century.
Background[]
She served in the operations division as SS Ariel's cartographer and navigator in 2269. She was tall, slender and middle-aged. (TAS episode & Log Eight novelization: The Eye of the Beholder)
History[]
In 2269, the SS Ariel was on an assignment to survey Lactra VII. Three of the crew went missing while exploring the surface. Randolph, Tom Markel and Randi Bryce beamed down to search for them, but were captured by Lactrans and trapped in the Lactra VII zoo for six weeks. During that time, Randolph became infected with a malarial-type infection and was bedridden with a high fever. When a landing party from the USS Enterprise were captured and placed in their habitat, Doctor Leonard McCoy assessed her condition and gave her an initial treatment. (TAS episode: "The Eye of the Beholder")
When the officers were released from the zoo, it was a struggle for Randolph to make it over to the exhibit table where her equipment had been on display, but she requested no drugs or help from McCoy, so she could savor her freedom.
When diagnosed in sickbay aboard the Enterprise, McCoy assigned Randolph to a month of inactivity while her system recovered from having been so badly compromised. As she was a physically and mentally active person, McCoy thought she would have trouble remaining idle for so long.
Randolph spent her recovery time aboard the Enterprise and was certified fit for duty just prior to the ship departing Boqu II toward intergalactic space along a course toward Galaxy M33 in search of a continent-sized cosmozoan jawanda. (TAS - Log Eight novelization: The Eye of the Beholder)
- Ariel personnel wore the Enterprise insignia design. Randolph's height and weight were estimated from silhouettes of the captured officers standing side-by-side at the end of the episode.
