Neral was a member of the Romulan government, ascending the higher echelons of it in the 2360s and 2370s. He was Proconsul by 2368 and became Praetor in 2374. Merken Vreenak was one of Neral's most trusted advisors. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight")
Biography[]
Neral was the son of a senator and a "representative of an influential family." Eventually, he participated in the Serona. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of D'era: The Romulan Star Empire)
In 2344, fresh out of the Academy, Neral served as an Uhlan of the Romulan Guard, providing security for the Romulan Senate at the time Praetor Dralath launched his attack on Narendra III and his subsequent deposition by Narviat. Even then Neral was seen as a promising youngster, having made friends with every faction at the court. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Heart)
After his father's death, Neral was sponsored by the Jaridan Coalition to take his father's place, mostly due to knowing "where all their skeletons were buried." (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of D'era: The Romulan Star Empire)
Neral's family (wife and two children) were killed by a Klingon attack in 2350 while visiting a Romulan colony. Neral was dedicated to archaeology and sociology, liked Delvan pudding and had a set'leth called Pensho. (DS9 episode: "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges", Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of D'era: The Romulan Star Empire)
- The RPG sourcebook The Way of D'era places the death of Neral's family in 2349.
Neral conspired with Sela and Pardek to trick Spock into helping the Romulans invade Vulcan. (TNG episode: "Unification")
During one meeting of the Senate shortly before Vreenak's death, Neral silenced three Senators, including Terak and Oratil, telling them they were like "children squabbling over a toy". Neral also said an alliance with the Klingons would not be as bad as one with the Breen. Following the news of Emperor Shiarkiek's death, Neral was accused of assassinating him by several senators, including Avelik. (DS9 - Tales of the Dominion War short story: "Blood Sacrifice")
In late 2375, Neral held a special meeting of the Continuing Committee to investigate a scandal involving Julian Bashir, Luther Sloan, Kimara Cretak and Koval. He later ruled that Senator Cretak was guilty of treason against the Star Empire and Sloan was to be further interrogated by the Tal Shiar. He also ruled that Bashir was to be returned to the USS Bellerophon. (DS9 episode: "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges")
Several months later, Neral travelled to Deep Space 9, where he attended the official Dominion military surrender which ended the war. (DS9 - Tales of the Dominion War short story: "Requital")
He was the Praetor of the Star Empire during the Watraii Affair where he ordered that all Romulan starships being assigned to protect the homeworlds. (TOS - Vulcan's Soul novel: Exodus)
He was secretly assassinated by Hiren by the end of that conflict; in anticipation of his fate, Neral retreated to his home, where he met his death with dignity as Hiren sent poisonous birds to kill him. (TOS - Vulcan's Soul novel: Epiphany)
