Patrick O'Brian was a human novelist on 20th century Earth. He was most famous for a series of novels set during the Age of Sail, featuring Captain Jack Aubery and Doctor Steven Maturin.

Commander Saavik read those novels during her time aboard the USS Armstrong. The Armstrong's Captain Truman Howes was familiar with them as well. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Heart)
