A piranha or piraña was a type of omnivorous fish which lived in freshwater rivers in the South American continent of Earth.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard once compared two quantum torpedoes launched from the USS Enterprise-E at two Cardassian Galor-class warships as "hungry piranha's". (TNG - The Dominion War novel: Behind Enemy Lines)

In the 2370s, the Federation Starfleet had a Iwo Jima-class USS Piranha in active service, presumably named after the fish. (TNG video game: Armada II)
