The Prantares Ribbon was a prestigious medal that was awarded to members of the United Federation of Planets.

Created on Stardate 1/9704 by the Prantares Council of Elders, it was awarded to either civilians or military personnel who had saved the life of a Federation civilian through peaceful means. The decoration appeared as a stylised Prantarian lamb that was surrounded by green wreath with the inscription "High Protector" below. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)

During the Earth-Romulan War, it was a special combat award. (FASA RPG module: The Romulan War)

It had at least two classes as well as a distinctions for peace and commendation.

The shuttlecraft Prentares Ribbon, in service to the Akira-class USS James T. Kirk, was likely named after this award. (DS9 novel: Original Sin)

History[]

Jonathan Archer was awarded the medal prior to 2161. (ENT episode: "In a Mirror, Darkly")

Admiral James Hunnawalt was the first to be decorated during the Romulan War. He was awarded the commendation posthumously for his actions at the Battle of Prantares.

Captain Sigul was also awarded the medal during the Earth-Romulan War. He assumed command of the 102nd squadron during a battle after his superior officer succumbed to mental exhaustion. (FASA RPG module: The Romulan War)

James T. Kirk was awarded the Preantares Ribbon of Commendation, classes first and second, prior to 2267. After this award was cited during his court martial on Starbase 11 over the loss of Commander Benjamin Finney, prosecutor Areel Shaw asked if the court would concede Kirk's esteemed record. (TOS episode & Star Trek 2 novelization: Court Martial; ST novel: The Captain's Table Omnibus, Appendix)

In 2267, Captain Suvuk was awarded the Prentares Peace Commendation following his actions in the Federation-Klingon War of 2267. Suvuk survived capture and torture to disable the Klingon flagship IKS Hakask and escape with the ship's data files. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: My Enemy, My Ally)

Lieutenant Commander Tholev Shavahar of the USS Locknar II was a recipient of this medal by reference stardate 3/0207.12 for his rescue of 17 mining engineers on Bactria III. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)

In 2270, in his Captain's log, Kirk nominated Montgomery Scott for a Pentares Ribbon of Commendation for his actions at Archernar IV. When an Omega-weapon destroyed the Archernar IV contact station, forming a small quantum singularity it its wake, Scott ejected the warp core of the USS Enterprise into the micro-black hole, which caused a reaction that repelled it one or two light years away from the system, saving the worldship and the Enterprise. (TOS comic: "Mission's End, Issue 2")

In 2367, a holographic fantasy simulation of William T. Riker's future service record showed him to have won the award in 2383. (TNG episode: "Future Imperfect")
