President Nanietta Bacco

President Nanietta Bacco in the Presidential Office, 2380.

The Presidential Office is the primary workspace and office of the President of the United Federation of Planets. Located on Floor Fifteen of the Palais de la Concorde, the Presidential Office is a half-circle, taking up a significant percentage of Fifteen, with the entire curved part of the wall consisting of a window that shows the River Seine, the Tour Eiffel, the Bâtiment Vingt-Troisième Siècle, and the Champs Elysées.

In front of the window is typically located the president's desk; when President Amitra of Pandril assumed office in 2365, she had a large desk made of a hard, lightly patterned material known as salish, which was native to the planet Atrea, brought to the Palais and used as her desk, though she operated out of the much smaller Ra-ghoratreii Room. Her successors, Jaresh-Inyo of Grazer and Min Zife of Bolarus, used different desks, but the Amitra Desk was brought out of storage for use in the Presidential Office in late 2379 by President Nanietta Bacco of Cestus. Min Zife's desk had had a replicator built into the structure, while Kenneth Wescott's desk was a large semi-circle. Behind the desk hangs the Flag of the United Federation of Planets.

Parallel to the desk is typically placed a large sofa, several meters away from the desk; perpendicular to the desk and the sofa are often placed chairs forming two lines. Different presidents typically install different carpets into the Office; Min Zife preferred white, while Nan Bacco installed dark green.

There are three entrances into the Presidential Office; the leftmost of the doors (from the presidential desk's point of view) leads into the turbolift area. The middle door leads to the waiting room, where the Presidential Secretary operates, and the rightmost door leads to the president's private study.

Not every president has used the Presidential Office; Presidents Amitra and Jaresh-Inyo both felt that it was too ostentatious and so made use of the much smaller Ra-ghoratreii Room, also on Floor Fifteen of the Palais.

The Presidential Office is heavily shielded to protect its inhabitants from exterior attack and abduction. (TNG novel: A Time to Kill, ST novel: Articles of the Federation)

When he visited the Presidential Office during a conference between Admiral Herbert Solow and President Kenneth Wescott in 2266, Federation Starfleet Lieutenant Patrick West, who would go on to be involved in the conspiracy to assassinate President Ra-ghoratreii twenty-seven years later, noted to himself that the office was specifically designed to impress and intimidate its visitors. (TOS novel: Seeds of Rage)
