Jawaharlal Nehru was the first person to hold this office, from 1947 to 1964.
On 31 October 1984, Nehru's daughter Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India when she was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards in retaliation for her military assault on the Golden Temple in Amritsar, a Sikh holy site.
