A Prison was a place in which some races, societies detain convicted criminals and personnel awaiting trial for crimes. The Klingons, Romulans, others detain these for slave labor in "prison camps", usually to mine dilithium, other minerals. The Federation has what it calls "Hospitals" in which criminals are confined for "rehabilitation". Crimes vary by culture, since some cultures such as the Ferengi encourage what could be considered criminal behavior (Odo believes that all Ferengi are criminals), and some cultures enforce the death penalty, and imprison people to execute them later, or enslave them.

This has been featured in ST:TOS episodes, some Star Trek movies and in ST:TNG, ST:DS-9 and even on ST:Voyager, ST:Enterprise episodes.

  • Prison on Federation starships: Called "The Brig"
  • Prison on most stations: Detention Centers
  • Prison on Planets: Varies by culture
