A proton pump inhibitor was a device used in the sewage systems of planet Beta III. Though the inhibitor played a minor role in the system's operations, its failure could lead to larger problems. Following the deactivation of the Landru computer on Beta III, Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott was forced to manually replace a faulty proton pump inhibitor in the city sewer.
