The Purists were a radical group of unjoined Trill, who felt that joined Trill were being enslaved by their symbionts and had been used to covertly take over Trill society.

History[]

In 2376, the Purists, led by Verad Kalon, engineered a retrovirus that targeted Trill humanoids and changed their biochemistry in such a way that the connection between them and their symbionts would be dissolved and that future joinings would become impossible for anyone affected. They also killed several joined Trill and even assaulted the Caves of Mak'ala, hoping to detonate a bomb there that would kill all the symbionts currently between hosts, but the attack was stopped in time through the combined efforts of the crews of the Federation Starfleet starships USS Enterprise and USS Defiant and all or most of their members captured. At the time, their numbers were estimated to be fewer than fifty members. (ST - Divided We Fall comics: "Crossfire", "No Quarter", "All Fall Down", "United We Stand")

Although disbanded, the group's mission was continued by the Neo-Purists. (DS9 - Worlds of Deep Space Nine novel: Trill: Unjoined)
