Quadrotriticale

Tribbles feasting on quadrotriticale.

Quadrotriticale was a high-yield, perennial, four-lobed grain, a genetically engineered hybrid of wheat and rye.

History and specifics[]

It was the only Earth grain able to grow on Sherman's Planet, and in 2267, several tons of quadrotriticale were shipped to Deep Space Station K-7 bound for Sherman's Planet. This grain was poisoned by Klingon agents trying to undermine Federation colonization; this espionage was discovered when tribbles consumed the majority of the grain. (TOS episode: "The Trouble with Tribbles"; DS9 novelization: Trials and Tribble-ations)

By the late 2260s decade, quadrotriticale was grown on the planet Vulcan in more water-prone areas, along with rice and tropical fruits. (TOS reference: Official Cooking Manual)

A strain of desert-adapted quadrotriticale was supplied by the Federation to Obsidian in the 2290s. Although it yielded one good harvest, the second generation crops failed, supposedly due to faulty genetic coding. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)

The grain was grown in large quantities in The Armada in the Maltese asteroid belt in 2365 when the crop was ruined by chroniton particles. Quadrotriticale was also used on The Armada to brew grain alcohol in a still made by a group of youngsters who lived there. (TNG comic: "Space Seeds")

In 2373, Quark invested heavily in quadrotriticale futures, and suffered heavy financial losses. (DS9 episode: "Business as Usual")

Ishka once discovered that Liph had been diverting public money intended for disaster relief and used it to make a poor investment in quadrotriticale on Sherman's Planet. Grand Nagus Rom later dismissed Liph from the Economic Congress. (DS9 - Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine novella: Ferenginar: Satisfaction is Not Guaranteed)

Quadrotriticale was also grown on the planet Mariposa, and was distilled into whisky by Bringloidi settlers. (SCE eBook: Out of the Cocoon)

In the late 26th century, quadrotriticale was being grown on the Kelvan colony. (TOS - Strange New Worlds 9 short story: "Gone Native")

Quadrotriticale was a key ingredient in chicken-and-quadrotriticale soup. (TOS novel: Spock Must Die!)
