Quantum foam is a region of subatomic spacetime turbulence, consisting of short-lived quantum particles and micro-black holes. The existence of quantum foam was derived from Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, and describes the chaotic nature of matter and energy when observed at a subatomic level.

In 2376, an Androssi device activated in an alternate universe caused the quantum foam to interact with a singularity, causing a breach between realities. (SCE eBook: Lost Time)
