Quaratum was a potentially explosive fuel source used in Starfleet emergency thruster packs.

In 2368, the USS Enterprise-D was carrying several barrels of quaratum for an experiment supervised by Lieutenant T'Proll. (SCE] eBook: Many Splendors) After the ship was crippled in a collision with a quantum filament, Doctor Beverly Crusher and Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge were forced to decompress the cargo bay they were trapped in to blow the quaratum into space.
