She attended Columbia University in New York City, and was a member of the school's track team. In 2321, when the Columbia track team travelled to Starfleet Academy for a meet, she met Cadet David Gold. The two wagered a home-cooked meal on the outcome of the competition, which Columbia won in an upset. After Gold set fire to his dorm attempting to pay off the bet, Gilman offered instead to cook for him. The two thereafter became romantically involved, and were married in 2322.
