The Ransom Castle was a private Human entry in The Great Starship Race in 2269. She was sponsored by the Ransom Carnvale International Mining Corporation and was commanded by former Starfleet cadet, Nancy Ransom.

During the race, the Ransom Castle ran into some difficulty when they entered a nebula as a short-cut. Unknown to Captain Ransom they were being pursued by the Romulan cruiser, Red Talon, who also wanted a short-cut to Gullrey so that they could annihilate the planet. Fortunately, the USS Enterprise arrived to save the Ransom Castle. (TOS novel: The Great Starship Race)
