Reassociation is the continuation of a relationship between Trill whose past hosts were either lovers or family members. It is a taboo in Trill culture and it can lead to a Trill symbiont not being placed in another host when its present host dies, leading to the death of the symbiont itself. (DS9 episode: "Rejoined", ST reference: Star Trek: Celebrations)

In 2372, Jadzia Dax and Lenara Kahn risked the death of their symbionts by reassociating. Lenara decided to not pursue a relationship. (DS9 episode: "Rejoined")

In 2376, Ezri Dax suggested to Taulin Cyl that the taboo against reassociation was to keep the joined from learning too much about Trill's past. Dax believed the concept of reassociation was against everything the Trill had been taught about revering memory and history. (DS9 novel: Trill: Unjoined)
