Luna-class RSV.

The reconnaissance science vessel, abbreviated recon science vessel or RSV, was a science vessel starship classification coined by Starfleet in the 2400s decade. This type of starship was inspired by the missions of exploration of the USS Titan prototypes and other ships of the Luna-class following the end of the Dominion War. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", Starship Requisition tooltip)

History and specifications[]

Luna patch

Luna Class Starship Development Project.

Doctor Xin Ra-Havreii designed the Luna-class starship at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards for the scientific exploration of the Gamma Quadrant. The development of this science vessel was sidelined due to escalating conflicts surrounding the machinations of the Dominion, and eventually the Dominion War. The

The Luna-class was designed by Doctor Xin Ra-Havreii, of Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars, and initially conceived for scientific exploration of the Gamma Quadrant following the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole. The project was sidelined by the impending threat from the Dominion, then restarted following the end of the Dominion War in 2375.

The first batch of Luna-class launched in 2379. At the time of launch, these had the most advanced sensors aboard any Starfleet ship. (TTN novel: Taking Wing)

By 2409, the Luna-class sensor palette had been rolled out to every Starfleet ship. Due to a rise in starship section modularization, Starfleet launched two sister classes to the original Luna, the Sol- and Polaris-class. This trio was then jointly categorised as the reconnaissance science vessel. (STO reference: Ships of the Line (website))

The components, like saucer section, warp nacelles, secondary hull, where interchangeable between RSV ships and could be swapped out at any Federation shipyard. This did not affect their standardised RSV capabilities.

For a different balance between the science, engineering and tactical strengths, Starfleet had rolled out the deep space science vessel (DSV). (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Soon after, the Comet-class became the fourth RSV ship class. (STO - Common Ground mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Following incursions by different permutations of the Terran Empire, the Lobi Crystal Consortium recovered mirror universe counterparts of Starfleet's vessels from the Azure Nebula. The Lobi Crystal Consortium made these available to Starfleet, for a price. Starfleet learned that in the mirror universe, the roles of the RSV and the DSSV were reversed. (STO - Under Siege mission: "Tholian Incursion")

Technical specifications[]

All four prime universe RSV classes shared a design style, to ensure modularity between them. The large, ellipsoid saucer section connected directly to the secondary hull above the primary deflector dish, without a neck. An optional mission pod was suspended on pylons above the saucer, behind the bridge module. Downswept nacelle pylons on either side of the secondary hull held an elongated warp nacelle each.

In contrast, the mirror RSV was defined by a tall, roughly triangular hull that combined the saucer section with the engineering section. The underslung mission pod was optional. Stubby nacelles sat on short nacelles on either side of the ship's hull.

By default, ships of this class were rated tier 5 and could be upgraded to tier 5-U. In the 25th century. A commanding officer required the rank equivalent of rear admiral, lower half or higher to serve as commanding officer.

Within the Khitomer Alliance, Starfleet officers and officers from Federation-aligned powers, like the Romulan Republic Navy and Jem'Hadar Vanguard Fleet, were eligible to command such a ship.

In the initial launch of the reconnaissance science vessel, all ship classes shared the same default capabilities and equipment. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Armaments[]

For technical considerations in the Khitomer Alliance, a reconnaissance science vessel had three fore and three aft weapon slots. Weapons could be swapped out. Default weaponry consisted of a set of two phaser beam arrays and a photon torpedo launcher on both forward and aft half of the ship. All weapons were rated Mk. VII by default. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Livery[]

In the 25th century, the design of the reconnaissance science vessel allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at shipyards. The hull components were interchangeable between RSV classes and did not affect the ship's capabilities. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
