The Renaissance[1] (OV-165)[2] was a 21st century Earth orbital spacecraft, a United States of America space shuttle in NASA service in the 2020s decade. (ENT episode: "Broken Bow", TOS novel: The Rings of Time)

History and specifications[]

OV-165

Undocking from the International Space Station.

OV-165 was launched in the 21st century, at some point after flights of Atlantis at the onset of the century, and Zefram Cochrane's Phoenix warp-ship prototype broke the warp barrier in 2063. OV-165 operated from Earth and docked with the International Space Station. (ENT episode: "Broken Bow" opening credits, The Official Starships Collection Issue 124: "S.S. Emmette")

Renaissance was built as the prototype of a second generation of shuttles. Budget cuts led to the cancellation of all new shuttles, except the Renaissance, which was completed with the help of international donors and private investors. (TOS novel: The Rings of Time)

The vessel employed a lifting-body design. (ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia 4th ed.)

OV-165 was larger than the previous space shuttles, like the Atlantis. (The Official Starships Collection Issue 124: "S.S. Emmette")

It was 40 meters long, had a maximum velocity of 27,000 kph, used aerospike engines, and did not require booster rockets at launch into orbit. Its metal thermal protection system was an improvement over the heat tiles of 20th century orbiters. (ST reference: Shipyards: Starfleet Ships 2151 - 2293)

In the year 2020, the Renaissance, piloted by Commander Shirin Ludden, delivered Colonel Shaun Christopher to the USS Lewis & Clark and then returned to Earth. It was launched from the Cape Canaveral spaceport with booster rockets. (TOS novel: The Rings of Time)

Legacy[]

OV-165 2024

The OV-165 model in 2024.

In April 2024, a scale model of the OV-165 shuttle was part of an exhibition during a gala for the upcoming Europa Mission. During a conversation with the supposed security guard P. Trotter - really Jean-Luc Picard in disguise - Renée Picard admitted she used to call it Spike because of its aerospike engines that saved fuel. (PIC episode: "Two of One")
