Rendell was a member of the away team from the USS Rutledge that landed on Setlik III during a Cardassian raid on the Federation colony there. He was ordered to search and rescue colonists from an assigned block of the settlement with fellow crewmen Lind and Garcia. (DS9 novelization: Emissary)
