Rennan Konya was a male Betazoid in Starfleet in the late 24th century.
Konya's regular telepathic senses were not as powerful as the average Betazoid's. However, he was able to train himself to read the motor cortex of others' brains, enabling him to anticipate opponents' movements, an ability which served him well in defensive situations. He referred to this skill as proprioception. (SCE eBook: Aftermath, et al) Later, he would discover this was inaccurate, as the word refers to one's own sense of their own body; Konya's ability was to read other people's proprioception. (TNG novel: Greater Than the Sum)
Konya and his family were off Betazed at the time when the Dominion attacked and occupied his home world. In the later months of the Dominion War, he joined Starfleet as an enlisted crewman, and began security training, though he did not complete it until after the end of the war. (SCE eBook: Out of the Cocoon)
Konya's first assignment was to the USS da Vinci in mid 2376, one of several crew replacements following that ship's near-destruction at Galvan VI. (SCE eBook: Aftermath)
By mid 2380, Konya had been promoted to ensign, and re-assigned to the USS Enterprise. That year, he began a romantic relationship with Lieutenant T'Ryssa Chen. (TNG novel: Greater Than the Sum)
By early 2381, Konya was promoted to Lieutenant, and made deputy security chief. In the days leading up to the Borg Invasion, second officer Miranda Kadohata included Konya in a planning session to brainstorm possible tactics for use against the Borg. He, along with Commanders Beverly Crusher and Geordi La Forge, worked on applying the technology from the transphasic torpedoes to their shields and other weapons. (ST - Destiny novel: Gods of Night)
In a subsequent battle with the Borg, Konya was severely injured, requiring emergency surgery by Doctors Crusher and Rymond, and a transfusion of type of J-negative blood. He was back in action by the time the Enterprise was boarded by Hirogen hunters, and led a team to rescue a security team under Lieutenant Randolph Giudice. (ST - Destiny novel: Mere Mortals)
Following the end of the crisis, Konya took his leave on Betazed. During the early days after the invasion, he suffered from post traumatic stress and survivor's guilt, and requested an extended leave before the Enterprise had completed its repairs and relaunched. This extension was denied and he returned to the Enterprise, where he continued counseling under Hegol Den. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace)
