The respiratory system is an organ system contained in most organisms, and whose main purpose is the exchange of gases between the organism and the environment it is in. For humans, the system takes in oxygen and breathes out the carbon dioxide.

Various species have their respiratory located in different places in their bodies. For example, the Talaxian respiratory system is wired directly into their spines. (VOY episode: "Phage").
