Richardson was a 23rd century Human man who served in Starfleet and was assigned to the Federation starship USS Enterprise, assigned as security chief in 2285. In that year, Richardson was one of the survivors of the battle with Khan Noonien Singh's USS Reliant, and he remained aboard upon the ship's return to duty.

Richardson heard an angry-sounding Excalbian propaganda transmission describing Klingon Empire war crimes against the Federation, and decided to lead a security team to check on a Klingon defector, Konom, who was a guest aboard Enterprise. Richardson and the rest of his security crew arrived just in time to stop Konom and companion Ensign Nancy Bryce from being lynched by William Bearclaw, Rogers, and others. After Richardson and his men phaser stunned the mob, Bryce and Konom thanked him. (TOS comic: "Errand of War!")

When a manifestation of Yarnek appeared in Rear Admiral James T. Kirk's quarters, Richardson and team responded to the intruder alert, but their weapons were easily blocked by the Excalbian. (TOS comic: "Deadly Allies!")
