Alsuran sector 2374

Map of the region between the Alsuran Empire and Kyana in 2374.

The Rilnar were a spacefaring culture,[1] an interstellar civilization based in the Alsuran[2] sector of the galaxy's Delta Quadrant. The planet Rilquitain was the largest colony[3] of the Rilnar Consortium[4], and the site of its capital city.[3] The Rilnar belonged to the same species as the Zahl.[3] Both cultures originated on the planet Sormana.[3] (VOY episode: "Year of Hell, Part II", ST reference: Star Charts, VOY novel: A Pocket Full of Lies)

History and specifics[]

Tens of thousands of years before the 24th century, a sentient species arose on Sormana, third planet in the Sormana system. This species split into two tribes. Contact between these, the Rilnar and the Zahl, often led to conflict.

Around the time of first contact, the Rilnar's culture included written communication and rudimentary mathematical skills. At the same time the Zahl were less advanced. Contact occurred when the Rilnar entered an expansionist phase. They enslaved the Zahl, who rebelled against their oppressors.

Over the course of centuries, the two cultures advanced technologically and drew lines on maps to demarcate their territories. Outbreaks of hostilities alternated with brief periods of peace.

Rilnar scientists unlocked the potentials of atomic energy, and soon after developed spaceflight, followed by rudimentary warp capability. That allowed Rilnar and Zahl citizens to emigrate from the planet. (VOY novel: A Pocket Full of Lies)

In interstellar space, the Rilnar formed the Rilnar Consortium[4], and the Zahl based the Zahl Regnancy around Zahlna II[3] Rilnadaar VI was a notable colony, with Rilquitain being the largest Rilnar colony by the 2380s decade. (Star Trek Adventures module: Delta Quadrant Sourcebook, VOY novel: A Pocket Full of Lies)

In the 2170s, the Rilnar waged war with the Krenim Imperium. By that time, they had introduced a beneficial antibody to the Krenim genome. (VOY episode: "Year of Hell, Part II")

In 2175[4], the Krenim scientist Annorax developed temporal technology[5] for his people to help turn the tide. (Star Trek Adventures module: Delta Quadrant Sourcebook, STO - The Iconian War mission: "Time in a Bottle")

Conflict continued among the population that remained on Sormana. The destruction of the ancient Rilnar city Batibeh was a cultural shockwave in the Rilnar and Zahl colonies, and helped turned their populations against the planetary conflict. Sormana became off limits to visitors and was made a protectorate between the Rilnar Consortium and Zahl Regnancy, who in turn maintained a fragile peace.

The conflict was affected by the Krenim Imperium in the 24th century. Around that time, the Krenim were allies of both the Rilnar[4] and the Zahl[5]. (Star Trek Adventures module: Delta Quadrant Sourcebook, STO - The Iconian War mission: "Time in a Bottle")

The weakening[5] Krenim Imperium provided its Krenim warship space frames to the Consortium. (Star Trek Adventures module: Delta Quadrant Sourcebook)

Interference by the Project Full Circle fleet of the Federation led to an end of the Sormana conflict in the year 2382. (VOY novel: A Pocket Full of Lies)

In 2409, the Krenim Imperium was nearly wiped out by the Vaadwaur Supremacy at the behest of the Iconian Empire, due to the threat its temporal technology posed. The survivors partnered with the Delta Alliance. (STO - The Iconian War mission: "Time in a Bottle")

The Krenim and their Alsuran sector allies then formed the Krenim Coalition. (STO website: Iconian War : Year of Hell Lock Box Stats)

Alternate timelines[]

A Pocket Full of Lies

Alternate timeline versions of Sormana and USS Voyager.

In a series of alternate timelines created by the Krenim scientist Annorax and his Krenim temporal weapon ship KIS Kyana Prime[6], people and civilizations surrounding Krenim space were erased from history. Erasing the Rilnar removed the beneficial antibody they had shared with the Krenim.

The Zahl avoided erasure until 2374. In that year, USS Voyager built a coalition against Annorax at stardate 51682.2[3]. Voyager, with their Krenim ally Obrist, managed to cripple the Kyana Prime, and the temporal weapon ship erased itself, undoing all of Annorax's changes since the 22nd century. (VOY episode: "Year of Hell, Part II")

The Krenim possessed time travel technology and observed Sormana in alternate timelines. Agent Dayne and his brother Obrist instigated a lasting peace decades before the 2380s on Sormana in such a timeline. Mollah, daughter of Dayne and Denzit Kathryn Janeway was placed there by her father to live in peace. In one such timeline, the city of Batibeh had survived the conflict.

In a parallel timeline known to the prime universe Krenim, Sormana was pacified at some point before the 2380s. The population their knew little of the Krenim. In other realities, sentient life failed to arise on Sormana. (VOY novel: A Pocket Full of Lies)

Technology[]

Golant

The Rilnar Colonial Command vessel Golant.

The Rilnar were a military threat to the Krenim Imperium by the 2170s decade. (VOY episode: "Year of Hell, Part II")

By the 2370s, the Rilnar and the Krenim were allies. The Krenim warship, armed with chroniton torpedoes, was shared with the Rilnar Consortium. (Star Trek Adventures module: Delta Quadrant Sourcebook)

In the 2410s, the Krenim's allies had joined in the Krenim Coalition and exchanged ships and technology. Ships of the Coalition were armed Coalition disruptor beam arrays and cannons, and chroniton torpedo launchers. These disruptors fired continuous blue beams.
