The Bird-of-Prey was class of ship present at Human's first contact with the Romulan Star Empire in 2152 when two of the ships patrolling space near a planet and minefield in the Empire warned the Earth starship Enterprise (NX-01) out of Romulan Space. (ENT episode: Minefield)

The Bird of Prey is superior to an Earth NX class starship although starfleet built the Daedalus to match it. it is also warp capable and fitted with energy weaponry. Although vessels of this class were used as testbeds for early Romulan cloaking devices, after the ship Praetor Pontilus was destroyed by antimatter-containment failure in its test stealth systems the Romulans wouldn't develop a successful cloaking system for decades (ENT episode: Minefield; novel: The Good That Men Do).
