In the mirror universe, Romulus was the adopted homeworld of the Romulans and capital planet of the Romulan Star Empire. In late 2376, Romulus was rendered uninhabitable by the detonation of a thalaron bomb at the hands of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. (NF - Mirror Universe short story: "Homecoming")

In a different permutation of the mirror universe, the Earth Empire pressed on after their victory over the Romulans in the Battle of Cheron in 2160. Two weeks later Imperial vessels appeared above Romulus and Remus. The Terrans destroyed Remus with molecular disassociators, which resulted in tectonic activity on Romulus. The Empire offered Romulus to become a subject world, supplying natural resources, workers and taxes and receiving moderate changes to their laws to reflect the new affiliation. On the eve of the deadline for the answer, the Romulans committed mass suicide. Earth subsequently sent colony ships to take over the empty planet. (TNG novel: Dark Mirror)
Star Trek: Mirror Universe[]
In the late 2376, thalaron radiation burned all organic matter on the planet to ashes. Less than 50,000 Romulans escaped the holocaust aboard the ships of the Romulan fleet. Following the loss of the Romulan homeworld, the Star Empire was conquered by the Alliance in January 2377. Romulan space was liberated from the Allied yoke in 2380, following the victory of the combined Romulan-Terran Rebellion and the signing of the Tripartite Armistice.
