The Saber-class was a type of Federation light cruiser starship in service in the late 24th century. One of the smaller starship designs in service, the Saber had a crew complement of approximately 40 people, with a maximum evacuation limit of 200. (DS9 reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)

Produced at Starbase 1, in orbit around Earth, the Saber-class was another project that began after the Federation made its disastrous first contact with the Borg.[citation needed]

Four Saber class vessels were assigned to the Starfleet Corps of Engineers in 2370.[citation needed]

Many Saber class vessels fought in the Dominion War. (DS9 reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)

BackgroundEdit

Notwithstanding the Technical Manual, Visual Effects Supervisor David Stipes stated[citation needed] the length of 190.5 is generally used onscreen. Some RPG sources[citation needed] put the length at 160 to 170 metres, with the beam being the same as the length. With a crew of 40 the lower size would be consistent with simliar sized Birds of Prey and Defiant class escorts. The discrepancy most likely results from an editing error in the DS9 TM.
