Sagittarius is a constellation visible from Earth, named for its characterization as an archer or bowman.

The Klingon species is referred to as "Homo Sagittarii" due to their origination or habitation of areas contained in this constellation. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

The Federation starships named USS Sagittarius were called as such for this region, the formations contained within and its mythological history.
