Sakuro's disease was a medical condition. Symptoms included fever and weakness. In the 23rd century, the disease was a serious condition, but could be cured in a hospital or starship sickbay provided it was diagnosed early after infection.
History and specifics[]
The toxin from Sakuro's disease killed red blood cells but otherwise behaved like leukemia. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)
It was a rare disease which originated on Epsilon Canaris III and was thought to be either viral or bacterial in nature. It enlarged the lymph nodes, spleen and liver. It was fatal if not treated within a few hours after reaching the critical stage when delirium set in. Later stages of the illness behaved similar to leukemia, where stem cells replaced bone marrow. The first known case was reported prior to 2025. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)
Among those who succumbed to this disease were Nancy Hedford and Demora Sulu's mother, Susan Ling. (TOS episode & novelization: Metamorphosis; TOS novel: The Captain's Daughter, ST - The Lost Era novels: Serpents Among the Ruins, One Constant Star)
