Semiotics was an academic discipline, also known as semiology, that was the study of signs and symbols used in communication, including the study of how meaning is constructed and understood.

Semiotics was the subject of a class that was taught at Starfleet Academy. Spock lead his year in the field along with eight other disciplines. (EV comic: "Flesh of My Flesh")
