Sheriff was the title of a law-enforcement official on Earth. The title had been in use since the Middle Ages on Earth.
The descendants of humans kidnapped from Earth by the Skagarans in 1864 also had law enforcement officials known as Sheriffs. MacReady was the Sheriff when the Enterprise encountered the settlement in 2153. (ENT episode: "North Star")
In 2155, Kwahu was serving as the sheriff of Popé Pueblo when he confronted Kolichiyaw about rules governing drinking at town meetings. (ENT - The Romulan War novel: Beneath the Raptor's Wing)
When subjecting the crew of the USS Enterprise-D to a recreation of Sherwood Forest, Q assumed the role of the High Sheriff of Nottingham. (TNG episode: "Qpid")
Later, Worf and his son Alexander participated in an Ancient West holodeck program. In this program, Worf took on the role of the Sheriff of Deadwood. (TNG episode: "A Fistful of Datas") Worf later came to acquire another Ancient West holodeck program in which he portrayed an Ancient West sheriff tracking stagecoach thieves through the New Mexico desert. (DS9 comic: "Unhappy Trails")
