"Sherlock Holmes Program 3A" was a holodeck program created and used by Lieutenant Commander Data and Lieutenant Geordi La Forge aboard the Federation Starfleet starship USS Enterprise-D in the 2360s decade. It was programmed with all of the stories and characters centered around Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character, and was based in Victorian London.

History and specificationsEdit

In the year 2365, La Forge and Data tested out the program for the first time when they had an amount of free time available. However, the first trip proved to be short, because Data was able to solve the mysteries immediately, having read the complete works of Sherlock Holmes. Following a challenge from Doctor Katherine Pulaski that Data wouldn't be able to solve a new Holmesian mystery, with Pulaski accompanying them, La Forge asked the computer to supply them with an adversary that was capable of defeating Data, instead of Holmes.

Unfortunately, this led to the character of Professor James Moriarty gaining a form of sentience and recognizing he was a hologram. After an incident in which he captured Dr. Pulaski and took control of the Enterprise, Captain Jean-Luc Picard was able to subdue him by promising Moriarty that he would find a way for him to leave the holodeck. Upon leaving the Enterprise in early 2366, Dr. Pulaski recalled this story. (TNG episode: "Elementary, Dear Data"; DS9 novels: Double Helix, Vectors)
