The Springfield-class was a type of starship used by the Federation Starfleet in the 24th century, a light frigate design. By the turn of the 2370s decade, the Springfield was nearing the end of its production lifetime, the final vessels of this type were due to be commissioned by 2375. The class was named after various cities named Springfield on Earth. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds"; ST reference: Star Trek Encyclopedia; Last Unicorn RPG module: The Price of Freedom)

This class presumably included a prototype ship that would be named USS Springfield, although no such ship was mentioned in details of this class's history.
