Squid was a common type of sea-dwelling animal that could be found on the planet Earth. It was also a popular food.

History and specifics[]

Benjamin Sisko served squid for himself, Jake Sisko and Nog in 2373. Nog announced it was his favorite Human food. (DS9 episode: "Blaze of Glory")

The word "squid" was sometimes used as slang in the English language, and later in the Federation Standard, to refer to personnel in naval service. MACO Master Sergeant Paul Stiles commented that this began with the United States Military Forces, where US Navy personnel who stayed on oceangoing assignments were referred to as squids, while Marine Corps soldier who left their ships to fight were referred to as "sharks". Stiles confirmed that the modern usage included referring to Starfleet personnel as "squid". (STO novel: The Needs of the Many)
