Starbase 173 was a Federation Starfleet starbase with a R1 Invictus-class/R1 Investigator-class space station facility.

History and specifics[]

Built in 2365, it was commanded by Vice Admiral Mamoru Nakamura, and Captain Phillipa Louvois served as Judge Advocate General.

The USS Enterprise-D visited Starbase 173 shortly after its completion for crew transfers. Among those transferring aboard were Ensigns Sonya Gomez and Dennis Russell, while Ensign Phylo of the Enterprise transferred to the starbase. (SCE eBook: Many Splendors, TNG episode: "Q Who?")

A hearing was held aboard Starbase 173 in 2365, at the prompting of Commander Bruce Maddox, to determine the legal status of Lieutenant Commander Data. Ultimately, Captain Louvois agreed with Captain Jean-Luc Picard that Data would be assumed a sentient being. (TNG episode: "The Measure of a Man")

In 2371, Louvois still headed the starbase's JAG office. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: The Command Division)

Anthony DeCurtis was assigned to the starbase after graduated from Starfleet Academy. (ST video game: Starship Creator)

In the 24th century, Starbase 173 was active in the late 2370s, after the Dominion War. (TNG video games: Armada, Armada II)

In Armada, the starbase's space station name was randomly assigned to a playing field station by the game software. The base shown in the game was basically similar to that of the episode, although the gameplay involved removing and adding different outboard structures.
