Starbase 257 is a United Federation of Planets space station. It is not particularly distant from Deep Space 9.

In the event of an attack on Deep Space 9 by hostile forces such as the Dominion, starships stationed at Starbase 257 were to travel there to assist the USS Defiant and the Danube-class runabouts in protecting the space station. (DS9 reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)

During the Dominion War, Starbase 257 came under attack by several Jem'Hadar fighters. Jake Sisko and Nog had just left the starbase before the attack aboard the USS Shenandoah. (DS9 episode: "Valiant")
