Starbase 42 was a Starfleet installation in operation in the 23rd and 24th centuries. It orbited the planet Casmus III near Gorn territory. (TOS video game: Starfleet Academy: Chekov's Lost Missions)

History and specifications[]

In the year 2266, the station was under the command of Commodore Krinsky, and was in the process of being decommissioned, when dilithium deposits were found on the planet below. Klingon infiltrators killed Krinsky, and the IKS D'k Tahg arrived to take the dilithium. The crews of the USS Enterprise and USS Constellation battled Klingons on the station, and eventually expelled them. (TOS novels: River of Blood, Seeds of Rage)

In 2268, the Enterprise headed to Starbase 42 after having to mine replacement dilithium crystals on Kala, near the Romulan Neutral Zone. (TOS - Star Trek: The Manga - Kakan ni Shinkou comic: "Cura Te Ipsum")

In 2274, the Enterprise went to Starbase 42 following a visit to Cragon V. (TOS novel: Home Is the Hunter)

In 2287, the station was commanded by a reptilian Starfleet Captain when the USS Enterprise-A picked up Ambassador Palmer there. Palmer berated both the station's commander and Captain James T. Kirk for the fact that the ship was an hour late. (TOS comics: "The Return!", "The Sentence")

At this point Starbase 42 appears to be the same style of station as the Earth Orbital Office Complex seen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

In 2333, the USS Stargazer went to Starbase 42 for new orders. (STA novel: Progenitor)

In this novel, the station is described as brand new. It can be conjectured that either the old Starbase 42 had been heavily refurbished, or else Starfleet had given the designation to an entirely new facility.

Charles, Morgan, and Robin Lefler lived on Starbase 42 sometime prior to 2353, when they moved to Tantalus. (NF short story: "Lefler's Logs")

In 2365, Commander William T. Riker was dropped off at Starbase 42 to assemble a team to go to Paradise for a mission. (TNG novel: A Rock and a Hard Place)

In 2367, Admiral Leonard McCoy took a type-15 shuttlepod from Starbase 42 to the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG - The Modala Imperative comic: "In Memory Yet Green...")

Sometime prior to 2374, Worf attended a meeting with Starfleet Command on Starbase 42 to discuss Klingon affairs. (TNG novel: Planet X)

In 2376, Captain David Gold and Commander Sonya Gomez were summoned to Starbase 42 for a briefing. (SCE novel: Interphase, Part One)

It is never directly stated that Starbase 42 orbits Casmus III, but given that the Enterprise-A is headed for that planet in "The Return!" and arrives at the starbase in "The Sentence", it seems a reasonable assumption.
