Starbase 8 was a Federation starbase in Starfleet service in the 22nd, 23rd and 24th centuries.

History[]

In the year 2165, Starbase 8 had been built as a carved out asteroid and was under the command of Commodore Chang. The starship USS Essex was at the outpost when a distress call came in from the planet Delta IV. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Uncertain Logic)

In 2264, the USS Enterprise visited at Starbase 8 for shore leave. (TOS comic: "The Brain Shockers")

In 2267, the Enterprise set course for Starbase 8 for shore leave after returning from time travel to 1969. (TOS novel: Web of the Romulans)

In late 2269, the Enterprise was at the starbase following the incident in the Cherela system for badly-needed repairs and upgrades. These included installation of an intruder-defense system, a second turbolift on the bridge, plus a holographic recreation room using technology donated by Balok of the First Federation. There was also a crew rotation with Lieutenant M'Ress joining the crew, among others. (TOS novel: The Face of the Unknown)

In 2270, newly-promoted Rear Admiral James T. Kirk and Montgomery Scott traveled to Starbase 8's space station facility in the shuttlecraft Curie to investigate an experimental starship with intra-warp drive undergoing clandestine testing. (TOS - Star-Crossed comic: "A Bright Particular Star")

Although ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Uncertain Logic described Starbase 8 as an asteroid outpost, TOS - Star-Crossed comic: "A Bright Particular Star" showed a space station facility in orbit of a nondescript planet. It is unclear if the base had expanded to include multiple facilities or if the asteroid had been taken out of service.

In 2273, the refit Enterprise was en route to Starbase 8 when it discovered the lost Federation starship USS Endeavor with no survivors. Afterward, as Enterprise personnel took shore leave at the starbase's planetside facility (see Starbase 8 planet), and Zoologist Karen Hester-Jones transferred off the ship. (TOS comic: "Experiment in Vengeance!")

The TOS comic: "Experiment in Vengeance!" planet was illustrated with a blue ocean and rocky brown continents, possibly indicating Earth-like habitability. There was no mention or illustration of the asteroid or space station facility.

In 2277 and 2278, Lincoln Galle was assigned to Starbase 8. (FASA RPG module: Old Soldiers Never Die)

In the 2280s decade, Starbase 8 was located in Starfleet Intelligence sector 1 (also known as NW Intelligence sector). Nearby locations of note were Starbase 7, Starbase 24, Kadacohr, Edos and Darius III. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

In 2367, the USS Enterprise-D ferried a detained Captain Benjamin Maxwell to Starbase 8 following his actions in killing over six hundred Cardassian lives while in command of the USS Phoenix. (DS9 novel: Force and Motion)

In 2376, the USS Excalibur-A, a Galaxy-class starship, was launched from the base, under the command of Captain Mackenzie Calhoun. (NF - Excalibur novel: Restoration)

Since the Starbase 8 asteroid complex, the Starbase 8 space station and the planetside facility were never shown or mentioned together (excepting the station orbiting a rocky moon-like body that could have been the asteroid), it can be inferred that all three facilities were part of Starbase 8. It is also possible that each subsequent portion of the base had superceded one or both previous configurations being no longer in service, but that is entirely supposition.
