Starbase 86 was a 23rd century[1] Federation space station, a Sigma-class starbase[2] in Starfleet service. In the 2270s decade, Starbase 86 was located near the Alpha Kratonii system. It provided services for a string of mining colonies. (TOS novel: The Better Man)

History and specifications[]

In the year 2270, Admiral Handler ordered the Enterprise to report to Starbase 86 for resupply and reassignment following the loss and presumed death of James T. Kirk on Veneu II. Instead of heading directly there, Spock had Pavel Chekov plot an efficient route that took them past every system in the Wumpar sector where Kirk disappeared. (TOS comic: "The Alone, Part Two")

In 2275, the USS Enterprise crew discussed Starbase 86 and its services for mining colonies during their mission to Empyrea. (TOS novel: The Better Man)

By the 24th century, the station had been configured into a Sigma-class station. (ST video game: Armada)

Starbase 86 was a possible new assignment offered Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge should he have declined to undergo ocular implant surgery in 2372. (TNG - Slings and Arrows eBook: The Insolence of Office)

Starbase 86 remained active into the late 2370s, after the Dominion War. It was involved in active conflict when the Borg Collective invaded the Beta Quadrant in 2376. Locutus led the Borg during a campaign to secure an Omega molecule, leading to a direct assault on Federation space, and a counter-assault by the Federation Alliance into the Delta Quadrant. Starbase 86 was deployed and re-deployed in different locations throughout these campaigns. (ST video game: Armada)

The Borg returned to the Alpha Quadrant six months later, in 2377. They had antagonised the Undine - designated Species 4872 - into invading both Alpha and Delta Quadrants. With the Federation Alliance inactive, Starfleet battled the Borg alone, and launched a counterattack on their attack base in the Delta Quadrant, once again redeploying space stations quickly between three quadrants. (ST video game: Armada II)

In the Armada series, the starbase's space station name was randomly assigned to a playing field station by the game software.

The Starbase 86 designation remained active into the 32nd century. In the 3180s, its continued existence after the Burn was known to Starfleet. In 3189, Starbase 86 was marked on a holographic map in the command center of Federation Headquarters. (DSC episode: "Die Trying")

Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline created by the retroassassination of Deanna Troi by the Sindareen in 2368, Starbase 86 was far removed from any well-traveled shipping lanes in the early 25th century. Because of this, it was nicknamed "Starbase Dead-End" in the 2400s decade.

By 2405, Vice Admiral William Riker was the Starbase's commanding officer. His assistant was Lieutenant Dexter. In this reality, both the USS Hood and USS Chance visited Starbase 86 in 2408. The Hood collected Riker to ferry him to Betazed, where the admiral visited Ambassador Lwaxana Troi at her deathbed, and later attended her funeral. He remained behind to sort the effects of the now extinct Troi family, allowing the Hood to continue with its next mission.

Commodore Data arrived with the USS Enterprise-F to return Riker to Starbase 86. En route, Riker wanted to order the Enterprise to Forever World but was dissuaded by Data. Back at SB86, Riker commandeered the Chance under falsified orders, and traveled to the Rock of Ages. The Enterprise pursued the Chance and confronted them in a standoff. By then, Riker had already approached the Guardian of Forever. (TNG - Imzadi Forever novel: Imzadi)
